ABOUT US
The high school educational experience is designed to enable the students to develop their minds and bodies to their fullest capacity socially, physically, intellectually and psychologically. While instruction is the top priority, other opportunities are available to broaden students’ horizons.
Suffolk Public Schools has three high schools: King’s Fork, Lakeland, and Nansemond River. High school begin classes at 7:45 am and end at 2:15 pm. The schools operate on an alternate day schedule – three 90 minute block classes that met every other day and one single 55 minute block that meets everyday. The division also works in conjunction with The Pruden Center and the Governor’s School for the Arts.
High school students are required to take:
4 years of English
3 years of math (at or above the level of Algebra)
3 years of science
1 year of Virginia and U.S. History
1 year of Virginia and U.S. Government
1 year of World History/Geography
1 year of Fine Arts or Practical Art
2 years of Physical Education and
6 electives to earn a 22-credit diploma. |
However, students are encouraged to opt for a 24-credit advanced studies diploma, which requires another year each of math, science and world history/geography, 3 years of foreign language, and 2 additional electives. For more information on diploma options, link here.
Students are also required to pass the Standards of Learning end-of-course tests in six courses to earn a standard diploma and in nine courses to earn an advanced studies diploma before they can graduate. For more information on verified credits, link here.
